  • Rocca Monaldeschi

Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara hosts Territorial Museum (Museo Territoriale) of Bolsena lake. It is interesting for its position near to the lake and for its historical background. The museum spreads over three floors of the building: at the ground floor, through archeological artifacts and educational panels, the sections regarding the formation of the volcanic basin of the lake, the prehistory, the proto-history and the Etruscan period up to the Roman conquest are meticulously explained.

In the central part of this floor there are artifacts of the Iron Age, recovered from the inhabitated area of “Gran Carro”. “Gran Carro” is a submerged area rediscovered near the eastern bank of Bolsena lake in 1959. The upper floor of the museum is entirely dedicated to the artifacts coming from the archeological excavation of the Etruscan-Roman town of Volsinii. At the lower floor the period from Middle Ages to the present day is illustrated. In this floor the exhibition begins with the beautiful ceramics of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, discovered in the “butto” (natural or artificial cavities adjacent to the houses used for garbage and sewage) of the main tower of the Rocca Monaldeschi, and continues with the introduction to the folkloristic aspects (popular traditions and religious festivals), with particular consideration for the work of the fishermen, explained through the exhibition of objects, tools and educational panels regarding the techniques of fishing, species of fishes and the natural environment of the lake.

In the external courtyard there is a lapidary with many altars and Roman funeral stones. The Territorial Museum (Museo Territoriale) of Bolsena lake is a tourist attraction, a center of scientific research and a place of cultural production and socialization. From the bastion of the Rocca, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama: you can see the lake in its entirety and the archeological excavations of the Etruscan-Roman town of Volsinii, near to the museum.
